A New Era Begins in Deposit Products

There will be a ‘Returnable’ warning on the packaging of the products. So when does the returnable packaging application start? Which products will the returnable packaging application cover? How much will the deposit fees be? What will be its contribution to the economy?

The Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change will implement the returnable packaging application in order to prevent environmental pollution and increase recycling. With the application, citizens will be able to receive a deposit by re-delivering the packaging of the products they bought from the markets to the markets, thus earning money. We all talked about the first step of the application last year with the pricing in plastic bags. But with the effect of the regulation, the use of bags has decreased significantly.

When does the returnable packaging application start?

In the new period, it is aimed to deliver products that are harmful to the environment, such as metal, glass and plastic, to markets with a deposit refund application instead of throwing them into the environment. Companies will comply with the application criteria until January 2022, and in June 2022, it will actually be implemented. With the application, glass, metal, pet and plastic wastes will be taken back at the return points and the deposit fees will be refunded.

Which products will the returnable packaging application cover?

Within the scope of the application, the phrase “returnable” will be placed on the packages in a way that cannot be easily erased, and the deposit fee will be separately stated in the sales document. With the application that will start on January 1, 2022, it is expected that bottles and barrels will be offered for sale together with the returnable packaging application within the framework of this application, which also includes places such as hotels, restaurants and cafes, while LPG cylinders, water bottles, wooden or plastic pallets are in the products.

How much will the deposit fees be?

While no explanation has yet been made as to how much the deposit fees will be, there will need to be an amount to encourage the return of the packaging.

What will be its contribution to the economy?

With the application, it is planned to encourage the recycling of wastes. If the system works correctly, it is calculated that 1 million tons of additional waste can be prevented in Turkey every year.

We know that 9 billion of the 20 billion beverage packages used each year in Turkey are made of plastic, and with the recycling of these wastes, it will contribute approximately 1.4 billion liras to the economy per year.
